When it is time to hit the road for a business trip, it’s important to make sure you have all your ducks in a row at home and at the office. While going out of town for a few days can be exciting, you can forget to do some things in the midst of that excitement and that can set your trip up for disaster right from the start. Follow this checklist on how to prepare for your next business trip so that you won’t have to worry about a thing while you are on the road.

Clean Up Your Mail
Email follows up wherever we go these days. It can be a blessing and a curse. Before you head out on your business trip, try to make time to clean out your inbox and get caught up on all your emails. This can ensure you are not leaving town with any unfinished business that might distract you while you are away.
Do the same for your personal email as well. If friends or family are waiting to hear from you about something, don’t leave them hanging. A good rule to follow is to try to respond to emails within 24 hours of receiving them. While that might seem like a really long time, it is acceptable business and personal practice to set those boundaries with your email inbox.
Leave the Valuables at Home
When you travel for work, you may find yourself becoming overwhelmed with everything you need to accomplish when you are away. In preparing to leave town for a few days, don’t risk losing your rose gold engagement ring, or your expensive watch: take them off and leave them home. You should get in the habit of travelling with costume jewelry so you don’t run the risk of having your valuables stolen or misplaced.
Have a Go-Bag Ready
If you travel any amount of time for your job, it is probably a good idea to have a bag semi-packed all the time. This bag can contain a second set of all your toiletries so you aren’t rushing around the morning you are boarding an airplane trying to pack your shampoo and conditioner. Have this bag somewhere hand and keep it packed with fresh undergarments and travel accessories you may need. Then you can just add the outfits and footwear you need anytime it is time to travel again. If having a go-bag doesn’t seem like a reasonable thing for you to keep up, have a printable packing list you can use over and over again and keep it near your computer so you can just grab it when it’s time to travel and check the boxes quickly and efficiently.
Traveling for work doesn’t have to be stressful. It can actually be a nice break to get away from the office and home for a few days. You get a hotel room all to yourself and someone else is going to make all your meals for you. It can be a real treat. Have a game plan before you leave and it will make your travels that much smoother in the long run. Happy traveling!

Editor’s Note: Thank you for another wonderful post, Jen. I wanted to add something to the list since I think it is important to have a compact toiletries bag is also essential for travel whether someone is going for business or vacation. I carry minimal makeup when I travel and since I am a skincare junkie, my travel bag will have more skincare stuff than makeup anyway. The list of products I would carry with me are (in no particular order):
- Toothpaste, Toothbrush
- Solid perfume/Roll-on perfume
- Face wash (best if it is an all-purpose cleanser and can double as a body wash)
- Moisturiser with sunscreen
- All-purpose body balm (lotion or cream based on the weather)
- Lip balm
- Hair brush/comb
- Hand sanitiser
- Wet wipes
