What is Crohn’s Disease? What is the treatment of Crohn’s Disease?

What is Crohn’s Disease?

Crohn’s Disease is a chronic disease (belonging to a group of conditions called IBD – Irritable Bowel Syndrome) caused by the inflammation of any part of the Gastrointestinal Tract (GI tract). Crohn’s disease is different from Ulcerative Colitis because UC is identified as the inflammation of the colon while Crohn’s disease is the inflammation of any part of the Gastrointestinal(GI) tract from mouth to anus.
The GI tract usually contains useful bacteria which help in digestion and assimilation of nutrients. And immune system usually attacks any virus, fungi and other micro organisms which are foreign bodies. Under normal circumstances, the foreign bodies are attacked while the useful bacteria flourish within our digestive system.
But in people with any form of the Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), the useful bacteria are also attacked by the immune system of the body.
The immune system sends blood cells (White Blood Cells WBCs) to the intestines which causes inflammation. If the inflammation does not subside immediately, it takes the form of chronic inflammation, ulceration and thickening of intestinal wall. These together create discomfort and then pain to the patients. Crohn’s disease also runs in families. But it can also occur in individuals for various reasons.
